product_thumbnailA new book on the outdoor adventures of NC State’s Caldwell Fellows has already generated $1,000 that will be used to give other students the training they need to serve as leaders on future Caldwell expeditions.

Jerry Barker wrote “Pushing Boundaries” earlier this year to chronicle the annual expeditions by Caldwell Fellows over the last three decades. The book includes contributions and photos from 135 former Caldwell Fellows from 39 wilderness trips.

Barker, who has led the expeditions for the Caldwells, wrote the book, in part, to raise money for the Mark Wagoner Fund. The fund was established after the unexpected death of former Fellow Mark Wagoner in 2003, and supports two annual trips to train future expedition leaders in areas such as wilderness medicine and the skills needed to lead a wilderness expedition.

Barker says the book has been well received, and that he’s sold enough to donate $1,000 to the Mark Wagoner Fund. But he’s hoping to sell more.

“I would like to see more sales to the alumni of Caldwell Fellows,” he says. “I would love to add more to the Mark Wagoner Fund.”

Those wishing to support the Caldwell Wilderness Experience or honor Wagoner can do so by purchasing Barker’s book, or by giving to the Mark Wagoner Fund. Checks should be made out to the NC State Alumni Association, with Mark Wagoner Fund in the ‘for’ line. Mail checks to: The Caldwell Fellows, NCSU Box 7121, Raleigh, N.C., 27695.

The Caldwell Fellows program is an intensive leadership-development scholarship program that was created by the Alumni Association to honor the legacy of Chancellor John T. Caldwell.
